Newborn calves and colostrum

Colostrum is defined as secreted milk from mammary glands immediately prior to calving and during to first week following calving. Colostrum provides adequate and balanced nutrient ingradients for need of growing calf during its first days. Colostrum intake is very important for newborn calf regarding resistance to diseases, growing rate and its survivality. If a calf could not get sufficient colostrum during the critical period after calving, the highest risk is occured for survival. Calves should take colostrum at least 6% of their body weight during the first 6 hours after calving. The level of antibodies in blood is maximum at 12-24 hours after resorption of antibodies from colostrum. The purpose of this review is to give a practical information in terms of ingradients of colostrum, the importance of colostrum for newborn calves and feeding calves with colostrum.
