Protective role of supplemental kefir and yoğurt on increased lipid peroxidation caused by high-cholesterol diet

The aim of this study was to determine the protective role of dietary intake Kefir and Yoğurt on increased lipid peroxidation as malondialdehyte (MDA) and on the antioxidative defense mechanisms in the erythiscytes of mice receiving a high-cholesterol diet. Forth adult male swiss Albino Mice (10 in each group) were randomly divided into four groups. The mice were fed a normal diet, but group 2, 3 and 4 received a daily supplement in their diet of 2g/100g body weight (b.w.) for 90 days. For 60 days subsequently, the control group (group 1) was fed with a normal diet, and the second group fed 30 ml/kg kefir, the third group was fed 30 ml/kg yogurt. After the last supplemental kefir and yogurt, 10 mice from each group were killed. Blood samples were taken for the levels of molonildialdehyte (MDA) and reduced, qlutathione (GSH), and activities of qlutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) enzymes measurements by heart puncture. MDA levels in the plasma was significantly (P<0.01) higher in the cholesterol feed group than in the control group. Also, the GSH levels and GSH-Px and CAT activities in erytrocytes were significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01, respectively) lower in the cholesterol group than in the control group. However, the MDA levels of plasma in kefir and yogurt supplementation groups were significantly (P<0.01) decreased. These results indicate that supplemental kefir and yogurt heve significant protective effects on the blood against increased LPO caused by high-Cholesterol.
