Effect of carbon tetrachloride and ethil alchol in plasma lipid peroxidation and erythrocyte antioxidant of the mice

Changes in the levels of malondiaidehide (MDA, a degradative product of lipid peroxidation) and in the antioxidant defens system in rats with carbontetrachloride and ethanol-induced liver degeneration were studied, in order to determine whethere is any reation between these parameters and disease. Three week old clinically healthy famale Swiss Albino mice (n= 30) weighing 25-30 g were used in this study. The animals were allowed to acclimatize for 15 days and randomly assorted into following groups: Group I (n=10) Animals were put on a normal diet and sham-treated with 2 ml/kg distilled water through oral gavage, three times a week for 10 weeks this group of animals served as control. Group II (n= 10) Animals were put on a normal diet and treated with 2 ml/kg B. W $CCl_4$ dissolved in 2 ml distilled water through oral gavage, three times a week for 10 weeks. Group III (n=10) Animals were put on a normal diet and treated with 3 ml/kg b w ethanol through oral evryday for 10 weeks. In the present study, plasma MDA levels of the $CCl_4$ and ethanol group were markedly higher than controls (P<0.01.) On the other hand, erythrocyte GSH and GSH-Px levels weie significantly low when compared with controls. The difference was statistically significant for catalase activity (P<0 005)
