Marcus antonius and legionary denarii

After Julius Caesar had been murdered, Marcus Antonius, Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus established the second triumvirate. Soon a competition ensued among them and the second triumvirate was destroyed. Octavianus defeated Antonius in BC.31 and a year later Antonius committed suicide. Before Marcus Antonius went to war against Octavianus, he minted a coin called the Legionary Denarii, to honor his legionnaires and to pay them. On one face of the coin a Roman galley appears and on the other face the legion eagle is displayed between legion banners. Also, the LEG(io), which is used as an abbreviation of legion, the legion number and in some cases the legion name are placed on the coin. There are not any signs on the coins indicating where they were minted. It is understood that the coins were widely used throughout the empire.
