Mentoring Competency and Advantages of Mentoring in Higher Education
Increasing in importance in educational administration today, mentoring is defined as a personal relationship between a less knowledgeable or less experienced client and a more knowledgeable or more experienced mentor acting as a teacher, role model, and advisor for the personal and professional development of the client. This study was conducted to review the concept of mentoring competency and its role in higher education and mentoring practices which already exist in higher education. Formal mentoring programs are being implemented at universities in many countries in the world. In Turkey, mentoring is being implemented under the name of "advisorship,” and an advisor is a member of the teaching staff who is appointed for every student. The relationship between students and their advisors should be a mentoring relationship which includes the concept of counseling. The review of studies conducted on this issue revealed that mentoring plays a very important role in students’ academic progress, leadership development, improvement of education and training skills, participation in the academic community, and adaptation to the educator role and career development, and ensures the organizational commitment of qualified teaching staff. As a result, it is recommended that a mentoring culture take place in universities and that teaching members have certain mentoring competencies if the quality of higher education is to be increased.
