The Relationship Between a Proactive Personality of Intern Nursing Students and Con ict Resolution

Aim: To examine the relationship between proactive personality characteristics of intern nursing students and con ict resolution. Methods: This is a descriptive study. Data were collected by face-toface interviews with 96 intern nursing students in May 2014. Results: Of the participants, 45.8% stated they had con icted with nurses, patients, doctors and student nurses at least once in the clinical setting. The average proactive personality scores of the nursing students were found to be moderate (54.1 ± 8.06). Of the proactive personality scale score averages below 60, a "confrontation" approach was found among the subscales of the interpersonal con ict resolution scale; of the ones above 60, the "self-disclosure" point average was found to be higher than the others, but the difference between them was not statistically signi cant. Conclusion: There was no signi cant relationship between demonstrating a proactive personality and con ict resolution approaches. However, students with high proactive personality characteristics were found to use a "self-disclosure" approach to con ict resolution by using more communication skills. It is recommended that educators encourage more proactive behaviors and teach rational solutions when there is a con ict in order for intern nursing students to express themselves more easily before clinical internships.
