A Different Route for Drug Administration: Intraosseous Access and Infusion

In situations where emergency treatment is required, intraosseous drug administration is preferred as an alternative approach if the time for venous access via peripheral catheter is prolonged. The intraosseous route is lifesaving since it provides faster access compared to peripheral catheterization. With this method, the treatment is provided by accessing the intraosseous vascular network. However, as is the case with other intravenous administration, serious complications can occur during intraosseous treatment when the necessary follow-up is disregarded. Such complications can be prevented by nursing interventions such as preparing the patient before treatment, assisting the patient during treatment, and following up for possible complications after the treatment. The aim of this review is to inform nurses, particularly the nurses who work in emergency services, on the subject of intraosseous treatment.
