Women s Sexual Activity Following Acute Myocardial Infarction

Aim: This study was conducted to assess the sexual function of women who were diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study was performed between September 2011 and July 2012 at the cardiology ward of a university hospital in one city of the Marmara Region of Turkey. Thirty women who were diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction participated in the study. Three interviews were conducted in order to determine the effects of myocardial infarction on the sexual life of the participants. The fi rst interview was held at the hospital. At the fi rst interview, the sexual functions and variables affecting sexual life of the patients were assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and Personal Information Form. The FSFI was re-administered at the fi rst and third month routine cardiology polyclinic checkups. Results: The desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm scores of the patients were low and the satisfaction, pain and FSFI scores of the patients were moderate at the time of the fi rst interview. At the fi rst month checkup, the myocardial infarction sexual functions scores decreased and at the third-month checkup, the scores returned to those at the initial stage of diagnosis. Age was found to be the most important variable affecting patients sexual life, not disease. Conclusion: It was found that myocardial infarction had a negative impact on women s sexual life in the fi rst month and the sexual life of the women returns to normal at the third month.
