The effects of selfing on the pollen fitness and the seed set in peper (Capsicum annuum L.)

This study aimed to investigate the effects of selfing on the pollen fitness and seed seting in Sanliurfa local pepper population, in various inbreeding generations through the Si to S7 and double haploid (DH) lines, derived from same population consider selfing infinite time (Soo). Field trials were carried out in the experimental field of Faculty of Agriculture in Harran University through the 1995-2001 cropping seasons, employing randomized complete block design with four replicates. The results indicate that, there was no inbreeding depression among various selfing series for number of pollen flower"1, pollen viability, total seed" weight fruit'1 and 1000 seeds weight. It was concluded that studied pepper population was highly inbreed initially depending on selection practices by farmers, retaining fruits with high seed contents. So selfing did not resulted in any deleterious effects on the characters under study.
