The effects of commonly used chemical substances on water quality
Su yaşamımızın önemli bir parçasıdır, fakat hiç tükenmez bir kaynak değildir. Dünyada % 2.5 ten daha az temiz (tatlı) su olmasına karşın %97.5 oranında bir kısım tuzlu sudur ve çoğunlukta okyanus ve denizlerde yer almaktadır. Ve sadece tatlı suyun % 0.2 lik bir kısmı kullanılabilir durumdadır. Bu yüzden bu küçük orandaki suyun temizliği ve kalitesini muhafaza etmek bu değerli kaynak için tehlike oluşturacak olan ürün ve proseslerin anlaşılması ile mümkün olacaktır. Organik artık ürünler, ağır metaller, gübreler ve zararlı kontrol ilaçları yaygın olarak su sistemimizin kalitesini etkileyen maddelerdir. Buna karşın bu maddeler insanların kontrolü altındadırlar. Bu maddelerin su kalitesini olumsuz olarak etkilememeleri için birçokşey yapılabilir. Örneğin zararlılar için kullanılan ilaçların, çevreye olan olumlu veya olumsuz etkilerinin bilinmesi, o maddelerin tehlikesinin derecesini anlamada önemli bir etkendir. Su kaynakları için tehlike arz eden madde ve proseslerin daha iyi tanınması ve anlaşılması ile, su kalitesinin muhafazası mümkündür. Suyun kirlenmesine sebep olan su sistemleri ve mekanizmasına yapılacak müdahaleler şimdi daha iyi anlaşılmıştır ve suyumuzun kalitesini korumak için daha ileri adımlar atılmaktadır.
Yaygın kullanılan kimyasal maddelerin su kalitesi üzerine olan etkileri
Water is an important part of everyday life, yet it is not an unlimited resource. While only less than 2.5 percent of earth's water is fresh water, the rest (97.5 %) accounts for salty water, which is found mostly in oceans and inland seas. Only about 0.2 % of earth's fresh water is available for our use. Therefore, the small portion of clean and quality water can be preserved through an understanding of the products and processes that endanger this valuable resource. Organic waste products, heavy metals, fertilizers and pest control agents are the common contaminants introduced into our water systems that affect quality. However, the use of these products is under our control as individual citizens. We can do much to keep these products from adversely affecting water quality. For instance, knowledge of pesticide behavior in the environment is essential to a comfortable understanding of these dangers that these products may or may not possess. With a better understanding of the processes that endanger water resources, protection of water quality is possible. The threat to water systems and the mechanisms that cause water to become pollution are now better understood, steps have been taken to protect the quality of our water.
