Effect of Prepartum Treatment of Vitamin E and Selenium on Postpartum Reproductive Problems of Dairy Heifers

This study aimed to investigate the effect of prepartum vitamin E and Se injection in heifers on the rate ofretentio secundinarium, puerperal acute metritis, puerperal mastitis and postpartum oestrus seen in the postpartumperiod. The material of the study was composed of 104 broodstock Holstein breed heifers (22-24 months of age) from adairy cattle farm in İzmir. These heifers were divided into 2 groups as study group (n: 52) and control group (n: 52). To studygroup animals, 15 ml vitamin E and Se preparation was intramuscularly injected 10 days before the expected date of birth. And to control group animals, 5 ml isotonic NaCl was intramuscularly injected. As a result of the study; retentiosecundinarum was detected in 3 (5.8%) of heifers in the application group, while retentio secundinarum was detected in 10heifers (19.2%) in the control group. Clinical metritis rates were found to be statistically significantly higher in the controlgroup than 42.3% (n = 22) and 23.1% (n = 12). While the number of postpartum mastitis patients was 12 (23.1%) in theapplication group, this number was 7 (13.5%) statistically insignificant in the control group. The number of heifers showingoestrus within the postpartum 45 days was also statistically insignificant in the application and control groups, 17 (32.7%),and 18 (34.6%), respectively. As a result of this study; It has been concluded that the application decreased the rate ofretentio secundinarum and puerperal metritis cases, but had no effect on the rate of puerperal mastitis and post-partumoestrus.
