Outcomes and complications of thyroid surgery: Personal series of 330 cases

Objective: In this study, we aimed to compare the complication rates of 330 thyroidectomy operations with published rates and to scrutinize surgical technique which is still applied. Method: The records of 330 patients who undergone thyroidectomy operations due to benign thyroid diseases at Arhavi and Borçka Goverment Hospitals between January 2001 and September 2005 were examined retrospectively and the complication rates determined. Results: Operation related mortality, permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, hemorrhage, wound infection, recurrent hyperthyroidism were not occurred in any cases. In 7 (2.1 %) cases temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, in 4 (1.2 %) cases temporary hypoparathyroidism, in 1 (0.3 %) cases permanent hypoparathyroidism and in 138 (44.2 %) cases hypothyroidism occurred. Conclusion: We found that our complications rates after thyroidectomy were less than the published rates. Surgical technique which is still applied is safe.
