Effect of warming with electrical blanket on the rewarming time of the patients undergoing abdominal surgery in the postoperative period

Objective: This study was done to investigate the effects of warming with electrical blanket on rewarming time in postoperative period of patients undergoing abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. Methods: This study was done with 60 patients operated in General Surgery Department of Selcuk University Meram Faculty of Medicine in 2004. The data in study were collected with a questioner form consist of 17 questions which was prepared by researchers, Turkish Standards Institution certificated scale, thermometer, tympanic thermometer and standard electrical blanket. Data were summarized with using number, percentage, and standard deviation. In evaluation the data, the t test and χ² test were used. Results: Body temperature was low both experimental and control groups in the postoperative period. In postoperative period the time interval to regain the normal body temperature in control group was 97.0+-30.9 minutes whereas it was 70.5+-24.0 minutes for the study group. The difference between the experimental and control groups were statistically significant. In addition, the rewarm period of the patients who were heated by electrical blanket was shorter than the ones who were not warmed by it. Conslusion: As a result of the study, in order to shorten warm-up time was found to be effective in the postoperative period the use of electric blankets.
