Prevalence and survival rate of congenital malformations in calves in Erzurum districts

In this study, prevalence, prognosis, and survival rate were determined in 97 newborn calves that are in different breed, age and gender, with congenital malformations, brought to veterinary surgery clinic in Erzurum between January 2004 and June 2011. The congenital malformations were the most commonly observed in the muscle-skeleton system (59.79%), followed by the digestive (27.84%), urinary (7.22%) and nervous (3.09%) systems. The prevalence of multiple-system malformations was 2.06%. Considering prognostic classification, prevalance of semi-lethal, lethal and non-lethal malformations that do not cause any functional disability was 50.52, 46.39 and 3.09%, respectively. Depending upon the anomaly type and prognosis status, animals were subjected to supportive bandage (n = 29), surgical intervention (n = 52) or euthanasia (n = 12). The calves with malformations that do not cause dysfunction (n = 3) and calf with metatarsal flexural-torsional deformity (n = 1) were untreated. Out of 52 cases that were undergone different surgical interventions, 41 succeeded to survive. Considering all cases, the mean survival rate was 76.29%.
