THE INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUSTAINABILITY AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE VIA BIST 100 AND BIST SUSTAINABILITY COMPANIES

Globally, the companies began integrating environmental and social aspects into the business during the 80's. Sustainability is a vital topic for today’s corporate world with the growing interest of stakeholders during the last decade. Thus, sustainability has a great potential to influence management decisions and financial performance. This research’s purpose is to investigate, in an emerging market context, the relationship between the sustainability and the financial performance. Although there are many works in this field, results are mixed. Accordingly, using the companies’ financial and market data in Borsa Istanbul (BIST100) and the Borsa Istanbul Sustainability Index (BIST Sustainability) relationships are investigated. This data consists of 165 usable data including 2016-2018 period. The analysis shows that sustainability positively affects the financial performance through size, leverage and volatility. Thus, the research supports positive results by pointing out that companies applying sustainability principles and policies have higher financial performance than other companies.
