The levels of plasma and the activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme of the dementia patients
Objective: We have investigated that the levels of plasma copper and the activites of antioxidant enzyme of the dementia patients. Material and Method: in this study, We have investigated that the levels of plasma copper and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), glutatione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (ÇAT) in thirty patients (8 females, 22 males) with dementia vvhich 21 out of them with dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) (4 females, 17 males) and 9 out of them \vith multiinfarct dementia (MD) (4 females, 5 males). Thirty three people (12 females, 21 males) that vvere not having demential complaints and not using an antkmdant vvere selected as a control group. Results: The plasma copper and erythrocyte GSH-Px levels vvere to be not changed vvhereas CuZnSOD and ÇAT levels were increased in both DAT and MD patient groups compared to control (p>0.05). in additional to this, increasing levels of CuZnSOD and ÇAT vvere found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). it has also been found that there vvere not relation between age and ali investigated parameters in both control and patient groups (p>0.05). Even though same directed correlation vvere noticed in control group, vvhile negative directed correlation in patient betvveen plasma copper level and erythrocyte CuZnSOD activity, but these correlations vvere not statiscally significan (p>0.05).
