Evaluation of daily energy and protein intake in approach to children with poor appetite
Generally, if the anthropometric values of children are consistent with standard values, they are considered to be healthy and not malnourished. In this report, in additional to anthropometric values which are used routinly in nutritional evaluation, the role of calculation of daily energy and protein intake were investigated, in early diagnosis of malnutrition. Material and method: The anthropometric data and daily energy-protein intake of 205 children with poor appetite were evaluated. The malnourished and well-nourished groups were compared with each other. Results: Inadequate energy intake was found in 81(%35.1) children. Malnutrition was found in 30 (%37) children. In the remaining 51(%63) children, in spite of inadequate energy intake, malnutrition could not be diagnosed on the basis of anthropometric values only. There were significant differences in mean daily energy intake between malnourished and healthy children (p<0.05). However, calculated energy deficit in the malnourished group was significantly less than healthy children (p< 0.05). Conclusion: If duration of ina-dequate energy intake is prolonged, development of PEM will be inavoidable. Therefore, calculation of daily energy and protein intake and comparison with daily needs must be the essential part of the nutritional evaluation. Children who have daily inadequate energy intake, in spite of anthropometric values that are not consistent with PEM, must be given sufficient nutritional support. In this subject more extended studies are needed about the eating behavior of children and nutritional training of parents especially in our country where malnutrition is still a major problem
