Knowledge and attitudes of health-based students in a public university in Malaysia on hepatitis B infection

Purpose: This study was intended to assess the knowledgeand attitude of health-based students regarding HBVinfection, its associated factors and the relationshipbetween the knowledge and attitude.Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectionalstudy. The data had been collected from the studentsselected through convenience sampling in a publicuniversity in Malaysia using a self-administeredquestionnaire.Results: Among the 117 student respondents, nearing half(44.4%) had adequate knowledge related to HBV infectionand nearing fourth-fifth (78.6%) had attitude score ofsatisfactory level. Genders and community status showedno association with knowledge and attitude regardingHBV infection, while faculty was significantly associatedwith both knowledge and attitude. Only knowledge butnot attitude was found to have significant positivecorrelation with age and year of study. Knowledge wasalso found to be positively correlated with attituderegarding HBV infection. Conclusion: This research found that age and year ofstudy were only positively correlated with knowledgeregarding HBV, but not attitude. Besides, the resultshowed significant positive correlation between knowledgeand attitude regarding HBV infection, meaning higherknowledge was associated with higher attitude.
