Impacts of De Risking Attitude on Correspondent Banking Services and A Cross Country Analysis on Identification of Factors Behind the Fall in the Number of Correspondent Banking Relations

Within the post global financial crisis era, especially large scale banks have become more cautious in their customer acceptance policies owing to the increase of compliance costs on antimoney laundering and combating financing of terrorism. Banks have avoided the reputational risk they would face in case of being subject to sanctions as a result of compliance audits, and restricted to offer some products, such as correspondent banking services, which are considered to have high risks in comparison to their expected returns. In this study, the economic and social factors that affect this behaviour called “de-risking” have been examined in terms of the change in the number of correspondent banking relations. It is concluded that the improvements in growth, financial literacy and risk perception indicators positively affected the number of correspondent banking relations and strict implementation of preventive measures on anti-money laundering and combating financing of terrorism, which are recommended by the FATF had a negative effect.
