The Geopolitics of Islam: Shiites in the Persian Gulf

In the mid-2000s sectarian strife between Sunnis and Shiites is considered to be a major threat to stability and security in the entire Middle East. This essay examines the socio-economic and political conditions of the Shiite communities in three Persian Gulf states; namely Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Iraq. It suggests that national reconciliation and regional consultations are needed to prevent further escalation of the sectarian strife and to ensure economic prosperity and political stability in the entire Middle East.
