İnvestigation of various bacteria and viruses in stool samples of cases with acute gastroenteritis
Stool samples from 200 subjects with acute gastroenteritis and 80 samples from those without gastroenteritis were examined. Campylobacter spp., Aeromonas spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), Vibrio cholerae, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp. were investigated by culture, and rotavirus and adenovirus antigens by immuno-chromatographic methods. Campylobacter jejuni was found in nine (4.5 %) and Salmonella spp. in Şve (2.5 %) specimens from gastroenteritis patients. Shigella spp., Aeromonas spp., Y.enterocolitica, EHEC, V.cholerae were not detected. In this group, antigens of rotavirus were found in 22 (11 %) and antigens of adenovirus in three (1.5 %) specimens. None of these agents was found in any of the samples from controls. Rotaviruses, and secondly C.jejuni were the most commonly isolated acute gastroenteritis agents in the study. It was thought that these two agents should be routinely investigated in patients with gastroenteritis in our region.
