Evaluation of Mathieu technique in distal hypospadias patients

A total of 54 consecutive children with distal hypospadias who underwent the Mathieu procedure between January 1989 and July 1997 was evaluated. The patients' ages differentiated from 1.5 to 16 years. Mean age 5.1 years. Patients' follow-up periods were 3 to 53 months and mean follow-up period was 16.2 months. During early postoperative period surgical wound infection in 5 patients, hematoma in 1 patients and opening of lateral flab of glans in 2 patients have have been forund. During late postoperative period, other complications which were fistula with meatal stenosis in 13 patients , purely meatal stenosis in 1 patient and fiistula without stenosis in 4 patients have been found in total 8 patients. Within late period of surgery any intervention was not required for 44 out of 54 patients ( 81.4% ). Using right techniques, Mathieu operation is a relatively auspicious technique for patients with distal penile hypospadias without manifest chordee.
