Using forms from old ages to present time and position and importance of st. John's worth (Hypericum perforatum L.) in modern medicine

St. John's worth living in border of field, road and forest naturally and having local nouns such as binbirdelik otu, kan otu and kılıç otu is perennial and herbaceous medicinal plant. The plant contains namely naphthodianthrons and xanthons, biologically active secondary metabolites belonging to at least ten different classes. Pharmacological activities St. John's worth exhibits are demonstrated by a number of clinical studies and its using, especially as an antidepressant, has increased in recent years. Today, selling values of different forms of pharmacological products prepared St. John's worth has reached millions dollar every years in the world. Our country is an important gene resources centre for Hypericum species and lots of them are endemic. Consequently, St. John's worth is an natural resource to be evaluated for our country.
