Serıal murder and sexual sadısm

Serial murder exists for centu- ries but has taken academicsattention only in the last thirty years. Features, motivations, cri- me scene behaviors and victim selection of serial killers distin- guish this phenomenon from ot- her types of crimes. Most serial killers have experiences of abu- se and humiliation in childhood. The triad in childhood after the age of five of enuresis, fire set- ting and cruelty to animals was suggested to be the early indi- cators of future serial murder. Psychopathy, antisocial persona- lity disorder, malign narcissism, autism spectrum disorders es- pecially Asperger s syndrome are among those psychopathologies which have been put forward to be associated with this phenome- non. As being the most frequent paraphilia found associated with serial murders, sexual sadism is an important area of attention. Sexual sadists are sexually aro- used by 1- Conducting violence and humiliation acts 2- The re- action of the victim to these acts 3- The sense of power and cont- rol resulting from the violence conducted. Detailed planning of the crime, humiliation, induction of pain and fear, pressure and control, roping, bandaging, muti- lation and torture are some of the crime scene behaviors. Besides, repetitive, ritualistic and signatu- re behaviors may be encountered irrelevant to the murder. In terms of preventive medicine, it might be important to consider care- fully the intense sexual sadis- tic fantasies of adolescents and their thoughts of putting these in practice. Although we can not determine whether or not they fit in the accepted definition of seri- al murder, serial murder cases have been documented in Turkey. In case of a forensic expertise in a serial murder case, observing sexual sadistic signs could be an important indicator. It should be kept in mind that examination of the sexual aspects as well as the psychopathology in other aspects might contribute additionally to our practice.
