Segmatation of Global Durable Goods Markets by Usage Rate

The importance of segmenting global markets has been recognized in most academic circles and global market segmentation has been proposed to assist in marketing strategy decisions for international marketing managers. This study aims to segment the global markets according to usage rate in terms of 21 durable goods and determine the groups of countries which are heavy users, medium users and light users, and the macro variables which discriminate the groups from each other. The results of the cluster analysis showed that out of 70 countries, 25 countries are heavy users, 23 countries medium users and 22 countries light users. The discriminant analysis indicated that heavy users countries had high disposable income per capita, high private consumption expenditures per capita, high GNP per capita, high average hourly earning and high urban population, but low birthrate and marriage rate. On the other hand, light user countries showed results opposite to those of high user countries; and medium user countries were in the middle.
