The relationship between diabetes mellitus regulation and serum trace elements

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between diabetes mellitus regu lation and the serum levels of iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium. Material-Method: In this prospective study of 30 well- controlled diabetes (HbA1c≤6.5), 30 poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c>6.5) and 30 without diabetes, patients with a total of 90 postmenopausal women were included. Patients receiving the treatment of iron, magnesium, zinc supplements were excluded from the study. Serum HbA1c, iron, zinc, copper, magnesium levels were measured. All patients' anthropometric measurements were performed. Results: There was no significant difference between the regulation of diabetes and body mass index, waist circumference, waist/height ratio, body fat index. HbA1c was significantly higher in the poorly controlled diabetes group (p=0.001). There was no relationship between the presence of diabetes or diabetes regulation and serum iron levels (p=0.36). Serum zinc levels were lower in the poorly controlled diabetes group (p=0.016). Serum copper levels were higher in poorly controlled diabetes group than both those with the good control of diabetes and without diabetes (p=0.007). Low serum magnesium levels were observed in the poorly controlled diabetes group compared to the non-diabetic group (p=0.015). Conclusion: The changes in serum zinc, copper and magnesium levels are associated with increased HBA1c levels.
