The Effect of Copycat Suicidal Behaviors in Turkish Prisons

Objective: There are many studies showing that suicidal behaviors in penal institutions in theworld and in Turkey are much more than the general population. It is an undeniable fact that the physicalconditions resulting from the location of the penal institutions and the disadvantaged situation of thepopulation they host have in the formation of the difference between these rates is an undeniable fact.Considering these conditions, it can be thought that there are many factors that drive individuals to suicide inprisons. With this study, it is aimed to determine the risk factor caused by copycat suicides, called werthereffect, in terms of suicidal behaviors in prisons in Turkey, among the aforementioned factors. Method: Adescriptive study was conducted in 2015 with 102 prisoners and convicts who attempted suicide in 18 prisonsin Turkey. With the application of the prepared questionnaire, the demographic information of the detaineesand convicts, the thoughts and feelings of the detainees and convicts after and before the suicide attempt werecollected and analyzed after being processed into the SPSS program. It was found that the impact rate ofcopycat suicides was %28, provided that it was limited to the institutions where the study was conducted. Asa result, it is considered that hearing information and news on suicidal behaviors both inside and outside theinstitution has the potential to affect detainees and convicts. For this reason, it is thought that it would bebeneficial to take the necessary precautions to carefully provide information and news about suicidalbehavior in the institution, regardless of its source.
