DESIGNING A CURRICULUM FOR THE ONLINE TEACHING OF TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAG

The University of the Aegean offers a variety of online programs for Life-Long Learning. In the first cycle, during the 2012-2013 academic year, 14 programs were offered and in the second cycle, during the 2013-2014 academic year, 53 programs and 346 modules are offered (e-epimorfosi 2013). The program e-didaskaleio glosson offers online foreign language courses for adults. The purpose of the online distance learning program is to provide an easy and pleasant way for adults to learn how to communicate in the foreign language of their choice. In the first year of implementation, during the 2012- 2013 academic year, online lessons for the Turkish language were offered for beginners. In the second year of implementation, during the 2013-2014 academic year, online lessons for the Turkish language are offered for beginner and intermediate levels. The first course was designed for Greek adults who had little or no previous knowledge of the Turkish language. The course focused on developing conversational fluency and the method of teaching/learning was predominantly synchronous but also asynchronous. The adult learners participated in one-hour, group teleconferencing sessions once a week; there were approximately 8 persons per group. The participants had access to learning material, which was both in text and in audio form, in a Moodle environment. The environment was especially designed for the online Life-Long Learning programs at the university. This particular paper outlines the design of the course and the syllabus, the realization and the feedback from learners after the first year of implementation
