RELIGIOUS CONVERSION IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The objective of this study is to investigate the psycho-social causes of the changes of beliefs of university students who were raised in Muslim culture. The total population of the study consisted of 15 students (3 females and 12 males) aged between 18 and 25 from different faculties of Akdeniz University, being the youngest of the participants aged 18 and the oldest aged 25. The mean age of the participants was 21.7 years. The lower number of female participants was due to the fact that women tended to less express their opinions about religious conversion and that they were reluctant to participate in the study. The participants were determined by the criterion sampling method which met the criteria determined pursuant to purposive sampling (Patton, 2014 230; Yin, 2011). The study attempted to investigate the phenomenological pattern focusing on real life experiences and case-related experiences in order to understand social reality (Creswell, 2015). In this sense, questions were asked to young people about their religious/spiritual beliefs and practices, their relations with their families, their religious education, their belief changing processes, factors affecting change of their beliefs and their satisfaction with new belief/disbelief. Face-to-face interviews with the participants were recorded and a content analysis was performed using MAXQDA 18, a qualitative data analysis program. Interview texts were re-coded as open code, axis code and selective code. The interviews were further coded by a second researcher in order to validate the data analysis. The above headings were determined as a result of the re-evaluations performed. It was determined as a result of the research that religion was not at the centre of the families' lives; secular Islam was widespread among families; family relations were limited; young people experienced some questioning about Islam and generally looked for answers for their questions via the Internet; they received limited or no religious education and that women were more abstaining than men.
