GUIDED READING: A ACTION RESEARCH

The overall aim of this research is to examine the effects of the guided reading method in the development of comprehension skills of students with reading difficulties. Guided reading is used as part of the education program in the United States. A small group of students with the same level of reading and needing similar teaching needs are expected to have the lowest reading disturbances and the reading developments aim to bring the usual reading. The study was conducted by third-year primary school students in a socioeconomically disadvantaged environment in the second semester of 2014-2015 academic year. The study group of the research carried out with the Fatih Primary School students in Siirt province centered on five students who had difficulty reading and who read 3rd grade. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools were used in the study designed as an action research. As qualitative data collection tools; "Wrong analysis inventory", "video recordings", "reflective journal", "health check tests" and "student products" were used. As a quantitative data collection tool, the "reading comprehension achievement test" was prepared and applied. The analysis of qualitative data was carried out with descriptive analyzes. In the analysis of quantitative data, the SPSS 18 package program and the Wilcoxon Marked Rank Test were used. According to the results obtained from qualitative data, it was determined that guided reading method contributed to the elimination of the difficulties of students with reading difficulties and the development of their understanding skills. There was a statistically significant increase in the levels of comprehension by students with quantitative data. In the context of the results obtained, guided reading has been found to be effective in improving students' reading comprehension levels.
