ANALYSIS OF NARRATIVE PROGRAMS AND TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF A SHORT STORY THROUGH SEMIOTICS OF TRANSLATION

The aim of this study is to determine the narrative programs in the short story To Build a Fire by Jack London and evaluate Turkish translations of the contexts with narrative programs. To this end, the original text was analyzed in terms of base narrative programs and instrumental narrative programs based on the theory by Greimas and Courtés (1982). While there was only one base narrative program in the short story, five instrumental narrative programs were found. Moreover, the “actants model” by Greimas (1983) was also adopted in order to show the actants in those narrative programs. For Turkish translations of the short story, three Turkish translations were analyzed based on Öztürk Kasar’s (in Öztürk Kasar and Tuna, 2015) “Systematic of Designificative Tendencies in Translation”. The analysis of Turkish translations showed that while translators preserved the meaning universe of the text in contexts with narrative programs, there were occassional designificative tendencies in those contexts. Therefore, it was concluded that translations of literary texts require a semiological analysis prior to the act of translation in order that the number of designificative tendencies could be minimized. Even if the ultimate aim of literary translators may not be to minimize designificative tendencies, they could resort to those designificative tendencies in a more conscious manner, making conscious decisions as to whether to apply designificative tendencies or not in rendering the contexts with narrative programs.

ÇEVİRİ GÖSTERGEBİLİMİ YÖNTEMİYLE BİR ÖYKÜDEKİ ANLATI İZLENCELERİ VE TÜRKÇE ÇEVİRİLERİNİN ÇÖZÜMLENMESİ

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Jack London’un To Build a Fire başlıklı kısa öyküsündeki anlatı izlencelerini saptamak ve anlatı izlencesi saptanan bağlamların Türkçe çevirilerini değerlendirmektir. Bu amaca yönelik olarak, özgün metin Greimas ve Courtés’in (1982) kuramındaki temel anlatı izlenceleri ve araç anlatı izlenceleri temel alınarak çözümlenmiştir. Kısa öyküde bir temel anlatı izlencesi, beş araç anlatı izlencesi bulunmuştur. Anlatı izlencelerindeki eyleyenleri saptamak için Greimas’ın (1983) “eyleyenler modeli” temel alınmıştır. Türkçe çevirilerin değerlendirilmesi için, Öztürk Kasar’ın (Öztürk Kasar ve Tuna, 2015) çeviride anlam bozucu eğilimler dizgeselliği yoluyla öykünün üç Türkçe çevirisi değerlendirilmiştir. Çeviri değerlendirmesi sonuçlarına göre çevirmenler anlatı izlenceleri saptanan bağlamlarda özgün metindeki göstergeleri erek metin kültüründe koruyabiliyorken bazı bağlamlarda anlam bozucu eğilimler saptanmıştır. Anlam bozucu eğilimlerin tam olarak yok edilmese de mümkün olduğunca azaltılabilmesi için çeviri ediminden önce edebi metinler üzerinde göstergebilimsel bir çözümleme yapılması gerektiği önerilebilir. Her ne kadar edebi metin çevirmenlerinin temel hedefi anlam bozucu eğilimleri azaltmak olmasa da, özgün metin üzerinde yapılacak göstergebilimsel çözümleme yoluyla anlam bozucu eğilimlere ne zaman ve nasıl başvuracaklarını, bu eğilimlerden nasıl kaçınacaklarını daha bilinçli bir karar olarak verebilirler. Ayrıca göstergebilimsel çözümleme ve çeviri göstergebilimi bakış açısı çevirmenlerin anlatı izlenceleri saptanan bağlamlarda hangi koşullarda anlam bozucu eğilimleri kullanacağına veya bu eğilimlerden kaçınabileceğine dair karar vermelerine yardımcı olabilecektir.
