Başlangıçta arazi ve vergi tespitine yönelik yapılan tahrirler Osmanlıİmparatorluğu’nun modernleşmeye başladığı 19. yüzyılda yerini daha sistemiknüfus sayımlarına bırakmıştır. Yenilikler temelinde merkezileşmeye çalışandevletin idari, mali ve askeri alanlarda düzene girmesini gerektiren modernnüfus sayımının ilki 1831 yılında yapılmıştır. Böylece imparatorluk sahipolduğu insan gücünün nicelik ve nitelikleri hakkında detaylı bir bilgiye sahipolmaya çalışmıştır. Nüfusun heterojen olması ve siyasal ve askeri nedenlerdendolayı gerçek nüfusun tespiti ise oldukça zor olmuştur. İmparatorluğun genelineyayılmaya çalışılan bu nüfus sayımlarından biri de 1836 yılında Van eyaletindeyapılmıştır. Bu sayımda Van merkez köyleri ve mahalleleri dışında buraya bağlıkaza ve nahiyelerinin de kaydı tutulmuştur.Bu çalışmada Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi’nde NFS.d kodu ve 2798numarası ile kayıtlı olan ‘‘Van Eyaleti Dahilindeki Nefs-i Van KöylerininGayrimüslim Erkek Nüfus Defteri’’ ve bu defteri özellikle yerleşim yerleriitibariyle tamamlama özelliğine sahip olan yine NFS.d kodu ve 2799 numarasıile kayıtlı olan ‘‘Nefs-i Van’a Bağlı Gayrimüslim Köylerin Gurbette OlanlarınınDefteri’’ incelenmiştir  

Initially, the census which was for determinations of land and tax was substituted more systematiccensus when the Otoman Empire began to modernize in the 19th century. On the basis of innovations, thefirst modern population census, which requires the state to centralize in many fields especially about taxand military service, was done in 1831. Thus, the empire sought to have a detailed knowledge of the quantityand qualities of its human power. Due to the heterogeneous population structure and political and militaryreasons, it was so difficult to determine the actual population. One of the census, which was tried to spreadthroughout the empire, was made in the state of Van in 1836. In this census, except the center villages andneighborhoods, the records of sub-district and district of Van, was also provided.In this study, ‘’The Book of Non-muslim Male Population of the Centre Villages of Van within theState of Van’’ registered with the NFS.d code and with the number 2798 and ‘’The Book of Non-muslimVillages that are Abroad under the Centre of Van’’ registered with the NFS.d code and with the number2799 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive, which follows the prior especially about the settlementplaces, were examined
