Fitoplankton hücre hacmi veya plazma hacmından yapılan biyomas tayini hücre sayısı gibi alışagelmiş tayinlerden daha duyarlı sonuçlar alınmasını sağlar. Fitoplankton türlerinin hücre büyüklükleri önemli farklılıklar gösterir ve bu farklılıklar böyle tayinlerde önemli bir hata kaynağıdır. İzmir Körfezinde fitoplankton topluluklarının biyomasını tayin etmek için türlerin hücre hacminin hesabında en bol yedi türün (Bacteriastrum hyalinum, Thalassiosira angusta-lineata, Thalassiosira decipiens, Thalassiorisa rotula, Leptocylindrus danicum, Pseudonitzschia pungens, Nitzschia longissima) hücre hacimları dikkate alındı. Hücre hacimleri, farklı lokalite ve mevsimlerde İzmir Körfezinden alınan örneklerde 1700 ölçüm yapılarak hesaplandı. Yedi diyatom türünün hücre hacimlerinin lokalite ve mevsimlere göre değiştiği saptanmıştır.

Local and seasonal variations of cell volumes of some diatom species in the bay of Izmir. Estimating the biomass in phytoplankton from cell volume or plasma volume provides a more precise assessment than usual evaluation such as cell numbers. Cell size differs greatly within species of phytoplankton and differences are important sources of error in such estimates. The calculation of species cell volumes to estimate phytoplankton community biomass were taken into account on more abundant seven species of diatoms (Bacteriastrum hyalinum, Thalassiosira angusta-lineata, Thalassiosira decipiens, Thalassiorisa rotula, Leptocylindrus danicum, Pseudonitzschia pungens, Nitzschia longissima) in the Bay of Izmir. Cell volumes were calculated with 1700 measurement on the samples taken from different seasons and different localities in the Bay of Izmir. It wa,s determined that cell volumes of seven species of diatoms varies with localities and seasons.
