Evaluation of anthropometric measurements in adolescents from the age group 10-15

The study was conducted to evaluate obesity and anthropometric measurement in adolescents. The study covered 413 adolescents, 203 males and 210 females from the age group 10-15 attending to first and second levels of a private foundation’s secondary school in Ankara. Weight, height, mid-upper-arm-circumference, waist-hip ratio and body water content in male adolescents were found as significantly different, in statistical terms, than those of female adolescents (p<0.01). The body mass index is 21.8 ± 2.3 in males and 22.3 ± 3.8 kg/m 2 in females. Bioelectrical impedance measurement yields body water value as 469.2 ± 41.2 for boys and 532.1 ± 66.3’dür for girls. The total body water percentage is found as 46.6% ± 6.0 in boys and 34.4% ± 4.1 in girls. In both sexes, the relationship between waist circumference and body fat percentage is significant (r<0.05). Also significant is the relationship between the thickness of triceps skin and body fat percentage (P<0.01). Examining anthropometric correlations of adolescents, we find a significant relationship between waist circumference and body fat percentage. As an important indicator of obesity, regular tracking of anthropometric measurements in adolescents is essential for the timely adoption of relevant measures.
