Determine the effects of long term playing soccer on lumbar spine degeneration: A preliminary study

The purpose of this study was to investigate theeffects of long term playing soccer on the lumbarspine degeneration. Fifty six subjects participatedin this study. Four groups which were active soccerplayers, veteran soccer players and their controlgroups were organized to measure their lumbarspine degeneration. Isokinetic trunk muscle strength, radiological examinations of lumbar and spinalflexibility were measured in order to examine thedegree of degeneration of subjects. Isokinetic trunkstrength was measured with the Biodex SystemDynamometer. Plain lateral radiographs wereperformed by using Kellegren and Lawrence scoreto determine the presence of degenerative changesof each lumbar vertebra and spinal flexibility wasmeasured by a modified Schober test. Resultsindicated a significant difference between the activesoccer players and the veteran soccer players in termsof lumbar disc degeneration (p
