A Research to Examine Parental Health Literacy and Use of Pediatric Services

The aim of this study was to determine the health literacy levels of parents with children enrolled in kindergartens in Burdur city center, to reveal the differences according to sociodemographic characteristics, to determine the level of use of pediatric health services by parents and to determine the factors affecting this level. In the study, no sample selection was made and data were obtained from 237 parents. As a result of the analysis, it was calculated that parents had a high level of health literacy. It was determined that the level of parental health literacy did not differ significantly according to other sociodemographic and research questions, except for having a child with a diagnosed chronic disease. As a result of the chi-square analysis, a statistically significant relationship was found between income level and the most common medicines given to the child without a prescription, the number of children and the status of giving medicines to their children without a prescription, the number of visits to a health institution for their child in the last year and the level of reaction in an unexpected/emergency situation related to the child(ren). However, no statistically significant relationship was found between having a chronic disease diagnosed in a child and the health institution to which the child(ren) is regularly referred; between the number of children and the level of reaction in an unexpected/emergency situation related to the child(ren); and between the number of children and the level of giving over-the-counter medication to their children. Having a chronic disease or being constantly in such an environment has a positive effect on the level of health literacy.
