Condylar fracture: The importance of cone beam computed tomography in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up

The incidence of condylar fractures is high. Condyle can be undisplaced, deviated, displaced or dislocated in such fracture. Conebeam computerized tomography (CBCT), orthopantomography (OPG) and computerized tomography (CT) images can be used for diagnosis. Treatment depends on the age of the patient, the level and displacement of the fracture, the state of dentition, the dental occlusion, and the surgeon’s experience. A 20-year-old male patient was visited to Atatürk University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology for a facial trauma. We performed a cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scan for obtaining location and definition of the fractures. Arhrocentesis was performed immediately. The patient had a significant increase in mouth opening without pain. Conebeam CT (CBCT) provides three-dimensional images and has proved to be a useful diagnosis and planning in the treatment of condylar fractures. Arhrocentesis may provide immediate relief from symptoms and help to prevent possible ankilosis.
