Postpartum Period in People with Disabilities

The postpartum period is a critical period in which many physical, social and psychological changes are experienced for the mother, baby and family. In this period, disabled mothers experience various difficulties in their own and baby care. The current inadequacies in disability knowledge and awareness of healthcare professionals also negatively affect this process. Disabled women generally expect healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable in the postpartum period, aware of their special needs, communicate positively, and respect their decisions. In the postpartum period, women with disabilities should be offered a specially designed perinatal care program that is individualized and tailored to the expectations of the woman and her family in terms of scope and form. The literature emphasizes the lack of disability-specific clinical data and the need for education, training and practice guidelines on postpartum care. In this review, the difficulties experienced by individuals with different types of disabilities in the postpartum period and their nursing approaches were examined in line with the literature.
