The view of local media to the EU: the case of yeni asir newspaper

The role of media on transnationalisation debates in different European Union member countries and Europeanization of public sphere are the long standing research areas since the 1990’s. The role of media in Europeanization of Turkey, as a candidate country, is almost ignored by researchers and media professionals. A few studies which focused on EU related news in the national media outlets. In the framework of this study, we applied content analysis to the EU related news of powerful Turkish local newspaper-Yeni Asır- between the years 1999-2005. The search of news articles and opinion columns of Yeni Asır newspaper which focuses on EU-Turkey relationship with the important milestones, found out that as well as national media, local media also give place to the EU related news in their pages. Within the six years the EU related news were covered in 345 news articles and the coverage of 279 news had negative tone, but just 193 articles were coded as positive news coverage. According to the findings the negative tone of the articles might not be the solely reason to explain the decrease of the Turkish public support, but it could be one of the contributing factor.
