Extracranial arteriovenous malformations of the head and neck

Arteriovenous malformations are uncommon vascular lesions of developmental origin characterized by abnormal communications between arteries and veins. At the tissue level, arteriovenous malformations are present at birth but may not be clinically evident. They most commonly appear in adults and there is no tendency for spontaneous involution. Puberty, pregnancy and blunt trauma were noted as precipating factors. These lesions are often located in cheek and ear. Treatment modalities mainly consist of resection with or without embolization. While early stage lesions like our patients can be resected and reconstructed easily, large lesions may require preoperative embolization. Treatment results and prognosis are better in small lesions. In this report surgically treated four cases with lesions involved in the cheek and neck were reported.
