Geographies of liberation: Trialectics of spatial praxis and some ıdeas on the search for a totality

This paper attempts to bring together the differential characteristics, immanent dynamics, and tension laden transformations of spatial forms and transpose these divergent meanings and the underlying interrelationships of a different order ensconced in the social context prevalent at our neo-liberal and postindustrial contemporary period. In doing so, this paper purports to draw on from a philosophical and socio-theoretical literature that emerged during the 1960s world revolutionary social movements and the ensuing theoretical rupture that arose from and within the incubatory atmosphere of those movements; and especially, tries to foreground Henri Lefebvre and Edward Soja s ideas on the relations between space and society-which we can aptly call as a selfreflexive geographic-historical materialism. As a corollary, and following the footsteps of Soja, I will also try to grapple with an enigmatic metaphorical narrative employed by Jorge Luis Borges, in a short story titled, The Aleph, published in 1945. I suggest that studies on space have for long emasculated the immensely potent and problematically fertile possibilities inherent in the dialectical tensions between space and society. Lefebvre s idea resonates with my suggestion regarding how to approach the relationship between the social phenomenon and the spatial and philosophical idea of totality, or, universality. Space is a product of social relations, and insofar as the spatial configurations harbor those social struggles, differentiations, divergences, and disguised discontent, social relations are born out of space.
