‘Intensive' and ‘Extensive’ Reading in Foreign Language Teaching
Intensive reading and extensive reading are two strategies that are widely used to improve reading skills in foreign language teaching. Intensive reading is a reading strategy through which texts are thoroughly studied semantically, syntactically and lexically and some reading skills are also provided in this way. In extensive reading, teacher control is more dominant and the major goal is to achieve optimal benefits in the shortest time through teacher presentation. In extensive reading, the main goal is to have students read more so that the have a taste of reading. In this study, the strengths and the weaknesses of the two strategies were identified and their features that might be used to improve students’ reading skills were highlighted. As the result of this analysis, a set of techniques were proposed which were found to be helpful for students’ reading skills.
