WORKED-OUT QUESTIONS SUPPORTED WITH SELF-EXPLANATION PROMPTS FOR DETERMINATION AND ELIMINATION OF STUDENTS MISTAKES IN MATHEMATICS
The aim of this study is to identify the effectiveness of a new method including worked-out questions with self-explanation prompts for determination and elimination of students’ mistakes in mathematics. In order to achieve this aim, data were collected in three steps. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used for data collection. The study started with a total of 36 students attending the 4th grade and 31 of these students participated in the first stage of the research. In the first step, students were expected to show 5/3 on the number line. In the second stage of the data collection, 22 students attended the study. In the second step, data were collected from “now it is your turn” questions which were given after worked-out questions with self-explanation prompts. At the third, step task-based interviews were conducted with five students. Data were analyzed using content analysis technique. According to the results of this study, students who couldn’t show improper fraction on a number line at the first step were able to do so after examining some worked-out questions with selfexplanation prompts. The results of the clinic interview show that students expressed positive opinions about this application.
