The Association Between Endometrial Cancer Stage, BiochemicalMarkers of The Disease and Body Mass Index

INTRODUCTION: The results of the few studies in literatureon the effects of obesity on stage and biological behavior of theendometrial cancer are conflicting. Therefore, it was aimed toinvestigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI)and disease stage and molecular markers of the disease inpatients with endometrial cancer in our study. METHODS: Archive records (pathological and clinical reports) of patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer whowere operated in our clinic were analyzed retrospectively. TheBMI values of the cases were divided into three groupsaccording to the criteria of the world health organization. Then, the demographic, clinical, pathological characteristicsand molecular markers (estrogen receptors, progesteronereceptors and P53) of the groups were compared. RESULTS: A total of 99 cases were included in the study. There was no significant difference in demographic data(p=0.038) except for hypertension and the presence ofmenopause (p=0.042) between the groups. Among the clinicalfeatures, tumor diameter (p = 0.026) and cancer type (p =0.042) were found to be statistically significant between thegroups. In the group with the highest BMI (>35 kg/m2), thenon-endometrioid subtype of endometrial cancer was observedwith the highest rate. There was no significant relationshipbetween stage and molecular markers of the disease with thegroups (p>0.05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Endometrial cancerpatients with second and third degree obesity seem to have anincreased risk of endometrioid type tumors with moreaggressive behavior, but there was no relationship betweenstage and other markers of the disease with BMI.
