Nursing Approach Based on the Roy Adaptation Model in a Patient Undergoing Hemiglossectomy Surgery for Tongue Cancer
The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) is a model directly related to thenursing process. It provides a practical framework for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. Roy's model isthought to be able to contribute to the nursing care of the individualwho has undergone a hemiglossectomy. This article aims to explain thenursing care based on RAM given to a patient who had undergone ahemiglossectomy for tongue cancer and to assist nursing professionals inplanning patient care. A case study of a 73-year-old female patient whohad undergone a hemiglossectomy was prepared on the basis of medicaldocumentation, an interview with the patient, and direct observation. The model’s four areas of adaptation (physiological, self-concept, rolefunction, and interdependence) were evaluated, and care problemswhich can be resolved by nursing care were identified. For each problemidentified, analyses were conducted on stimuli that are in the conceptualframework of the model and could limit the ability of the individual toadapt. Each care problem identified for the patient was expressed usingNANDA-I nursing diagnoses, and the nursing care of the patient wasplanned with the nursing process method. RAM is thought to be ableto contribute to the nursing care of an individual who has undergonehemiglossectomy.
