Bir şehrin semt, mahalle, cadde, sokak ve meydanlarının isimleri, ekonomi, sosyoloji ve siyaset gibi birçok alanda, uzak ya da yakın geçmişe ilişkin veriler sunar. Bu bakımdan mahal isimlerinin zaman içinde uğradığı değişikliklerin araştırılması akademik açıdan önem taşır. İnsanların yaşadıkları şehirde, mahallerin isimlerini ne zaman ve ne sebeple aldığı, bu isimlerin süreç içinde nasıl değiştiği gibi bilgilere sahip olmaları, şehirlilik bilincini geliştirir. Doğal ve tarihi zenginlikleri koruma gereğinin, tarihi mahal isimlerinin korunması konusunda da benimsenmesi gerekir. Ankara’nın mahal isimlerini doğrudan konu alan çalışmalar olmakla birlikte bunlar, isimleri oluşum ve değişim süreçleri içinde irdelemeyen, kapsam ve içerik bakımından yetersiz çalışmalardır. Özellikle, isimlerin değiştirilmesi ve yeni isimlerin seçilmesindeki etkenleri belirleme ve yorumlama bakımından makalemiz Ankara mahal isimlerini tarihsel süreç içinde saptamakta ve irdelemektedir.

The names of quarter, district, street, road and square in a city provide data related to distant and recent past in the fields of economy, sociology, politics, etc. Therefore an analysis of the process through which place names have changed constitues an important issue for academic researches. The information of when, why and how the names of places in the city they live have been changed in time increase the awareness of being urban. The attitude adopted for the protection of natural and cultural heritage should be the same regarding the protection of historical place names. Although the place names in Ankara have been subject to previous researches, unfortunately these researches are lack of historical background of formation and transformation processes of place names and are not sufficient in terms of scope and content. This paper deals with place names in Ankara from a historical perspective and particularly focuses on the changes in place names and the reasons for newly chosen names.
