Field condition diagnosis and treatment of acid-base balance disorders in calves with diarrhea

This study was conducted between 2004-2006. The aim of the study was to determine the suitability of Gastat-mini blood gas measurement tool in diagnosis as well as follow-up of the treatment in fluid-electrolyte and acid-base balance disorders in calves with diarrhea at field conditions. The study also investigated especially how blood Ca++ levels is influenced in neonatal calves during diarrhea and the effects of Lectade, an oral rehydration solution, in addition to intravenous treatment. In the present study, a total of 20 clinically diarrheic calves of different breeds and ages (2.4+8.15 days) of both sexes with a mean weight of 34.7+4.71 kg were includes in the treatment group (Group I). Additional 10 healthy calves were included as controls (Group II). Clinical evaluation criteria were skin elasticity, depression of eye ball, suckling reflex, and body temperature. In addition, %PCV and total blood count were measured. In venous blood samples, pH, HCCb", pCCte, pCte, sCte, base excess as well as blood Na+, K+, Ca++ glucose levels were determined. Compared to values obtained from healthy calves and after treatment, calves with diarrhea prior to treatment had higher RBC (p<0.05), PCV (p<0.01) ve Hb (p>0.05) values (hemaconcentration). pH, sO2, HCO3~ and base excess condition in calves prior to treatment were significantly lower compared to healthy calves and after treatment (p<0.001) (metabolic acidosis). Blood Na+, K+, Ca++ and glucose levels were not significantly (p> 0.05) different between diseased and healthy calves as well as between pre and after treatment. However, blood Ca++ levels tented to increase in parallel to acidosis treatment. The results indicated that the treatment protocol for diarrheic calves is successful. In field condition, the Gastat-mini blood gas tool is useful at field conditions in monitoring and direction of treatment. Moreover, Lectade at the prescribed doses (40 ml/kg/12 hours) is effective in the treatment of diarrheic calves which are still exhibiting suckling reflex and with mild acidosis as well as iri support to parenteral fluid treatment.
