The helminth fauna in wild pigeons of Ankara and its vicinity

This study was carried out in wild pigeons of Ankara and its vicinity to determine helminth species which may cause infectious diseases, between September 1996 and September 1997. Eighty two young and 118 adult wild pigeons were necropsied and examined. Before necropsy, the faecal samples were taken directly from cloaca for examination. According to the results of necropsies and the faecal examinations, the rates of general helmintic infection were 15 % and 1.5 %, respectively. A total of 8 helminth species (1 trematoda, 4 cestoda, and 3 nematoda) were identified during necropsies. These species were Posthannostomum galliıuım 0.5%, Raillietina echinobotlırida 6.5%, R. banini 1.0%, R. georgiensis 0.5%, Hymenolepis sphenocephala 4.0%, Ascaridia columbae 2.0%, Capillaria columbae 0.5%, and Dispharynx nasilla 0.5%. Only three of these species ( R. echinobotlırida, A. columbae, and C. columbae) were found in youngs, while all species were found in adult pigeons. According to literatures which we could access, R. georgiensis was reported for the first time in pigeons in the world, H. sphenocephala and R. georgiensis were reported, for the first time in poultry, P. gallinwn and D. nasuta were also reported for the first time in pigeons in Turkey in this study.
