Toplumlar çoğunlukla ağır ağır evrilerek, bazen ani devrimsel olaylarla siyasi, kültürel alanlarda değişimler göstermektedir. Herhangi bir alandaki değişim ise genellikle bütün diğer alanları etkileyerek toplumları dönüştürmektedir. Uzay çağının miladı Sputnik olayı da teknoloji ve bilimin toplumlar üzerindeki ani dönüştürücü etkilerine çarpıcı bir örnektir. NBC radyosu spikeri, 4 Ekim 1957'de uzay çağını başlatan “Sputnik anını, Sputnik'ten yayılan la bemol bip, bip sesleri eşliğinde, “işittiğiniz ses eskiyle, yeniyi ebediyen ayırıyor” diyerek dinleyicilere aktarmıştır (Boorstin,1973, iy.e. Dickinson, 2001). Gerçekten o andan itibaren yeryüzünde hiç bir şey eskisi gibi olmamış, hatta yeryüzü bile iki boyutlu değil, üç boyutlu olarak değerlendirilmeye başlanmıştır (Berkner, 1957, iy.e. Dickinson, 2001).

The Sputnik is the world's first artificial satellite of the Earth. This paper deals with “The Sputnik moment” which was the most important event of the 1950s'. The Sputnik was realized by USSR. Because of this, American politicians got a shock and the American people experienced the extraordinary fear of communism. This led the American politicians to revolutionize their scientific-educational point of view. The Sputnik greatly affected American social, political, and educational life in this period. USA started a movement to become the world's super power because they believed that there was no other alternative. The world began changing from that moment. Consequently, USSR gradually lost its political-economic power. It is ironical that “the red scare” transformed into a cheap labor paradise for capitalism at the end of this process. Now there are a great number of artificial satellites that witness the peoples who suffer the effects of globalization and those who enjoy its pleasures.
