This study aims to reveal the educational and sociocultural barriers encountered in the education practices of
Syrian students and the expectations and solutions of teachers regarding the education integration process
based on the experiences of secondary school teachers working in schools affiliated with the Ministry of National
Education where Syrian students are placed. The study was carried out with a phenomenological perspective,
and semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 teachers working in various branches in a school
affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Osmaniye. The problem of using language effectively in
the classroom, sociocultural differences, challenges to obtain academic cohesion, economically disadvantaged
situation of students and gender inequality experienced by female students were the main educational barriers
faced by teachers during the integration process. The findings also show that Syrian and local students have low
social contact, and having Turkish citizenship is a factor that reduces this prejudiced and exclusionary attitude
experienced by Syrian students. Teachers’ recommendations for a more effective educational integration process
highlight the need for the multidimensional assessment of the appropriate grade level of Syrian students and the
need for specialised teachers and support staff experienced in working in a multicultural school environment.
